Shows
One of my hobbies is doing amateur and semi-professional technical work on dramatic productions and musical functions. Most of these are done in Cambridge, with a few others at, for example, the Edinburgh Festival. Here follows a breif CV of productions.
Diagnosis
ADC Theatre — Technician
Merrily We Role Along
ADC Theatre — Assistant Technical Director
Great Expectations ADC/Footlights 2004 Pantomime
ADC Theatre — Production Electrician
Matilda Liar!
ADC Theatre — Technical Director & Lighting Designer
Matilda Liar! was my first chance to be let loose in the ADC actually incharge of something. As Technical Director, I arranged for the set to work for this hour-long lateshow, which consisted of some gauze and some decking that had to fit around a panto. For the lighting, we had a fairly versatile rig to play with, which allowed me to light the stage in several areas for the action to take place, as well as a few FX.
Romeo & Juliet ETG 2004
European Tour, ADC Theatre — Sound Designer
ETG is a touring theatre company, which takes a Shakespeare play to European schools and Universities every December. On this production, the directors and I worked together at very short notice to create a complete underscore for the show, which ended up having more sound cues than lighting cues! Touring places constant demands on a technician to adapt to new spaces, different equipment and different venues.
Me & My Girl
Cambridge Arts Theatre — Technical Director
Working at the Arts Theatre was a very different experince from working at the ADC. Having to focus less on building the set, and more on liasing between the Director, Designe team and the Arts Theatre staff to make the show work from a technical perspective.
My Fair Lady Lent Term Musical 2005
ADC Theatre — Technical Director
The ADC Lent Term Musical is one of the biggest shows in the Cambirdge Teatrical year, in terms of budget, aims and design. This year feature a large staircase and wall of flats, as well as a few other features. The challenges involved working out how to, and building a set, to schedule and budget.
Evelyn Budden: Auctioneer Harry Porter 2005 Prize Winner
ADC Theatre — Sound Designer
Diagnosis
Hen and Chickens Theatre — Technical Director
This show, written by an ex-Cambridge student, went from a very successful Cambridge run on which I assisted to its own week-long slot in a London Fringe venue. My work here consisted of advising on how to go about setting up the show on site, and providing the know-how to set it up and make it all work, before leaving to return to My Fair Lady - unfortunately I was unable to see Diagnosis in London, other than the dress.
Under The Blue, Blue Moon Cambridge Footlights 2005 National Tour
Pleasence Dome, Touring Venues, ADC Theatre — Technical Director & Sound Designer
The Footights Tour show spends two and a half months over the summer on tour, with a month at the Edinburgh Fringe, and a home run at the ADC Theatre. As such, it requires significant organisation, technical implimentation, and the ability to work in a variety of venues with a variety of different technical levels - from full blown theatres to large stone halls. From a sound perspective, the challenge is to put music between sketches that captures and accentuates the mood of the audience after the sketch, to leave them with the desired feeling for the sketch.
Threepenny Opera Edinburgh Fringe 2005
Ctoo, ADC Theatre — Technical Director & Sound Designer
Threepenny had a basic set, being limited by a small venue with a very short get-in period. On a sound front, we had a small band that had to be matched to the cast for the various songs. The challenges here were several: firstly, the venue was small and cramped, and the show had to be mixed from the same area the band were playing in, which wasn't entirely ideal. Secondly, we couldn't afford radio mics, and so had to make do with what we could get.
Sophocle's Women of Trachis Edinburgh Fringe 2005
C+1 — Technical Director
Women of Trachis presented a number of challenges for Edinburgh. I had to design a set which would be able to fulfil the demanding criteria, and be able to be set up in 15 minutes without my supervision. The set construction managed to fit perfectly in to the venue, with the venue staff being very impressed by its compact nature and efficient design. The production intself suffered from relatively low attendance, largely due to being a greek tradgedy at the Edinburgh Fringe.
Back In Town Again: "Waltzing Out of Town Edinburgh Fringe 2005
Smirnoff Underbelly, ADC Theatre —Technical Director
A very demanding production, with a series of closely timed sound and lighting cues, as a complete two man opperation - myself in the box and Nick Mohammed on stage. This presented a lot of challenges, particularly in Edinburgh where the venues technical equipment was not always the most reliable, and for such a technically demanding show this made me get very quick at replotting.
Missing Persons: Four Tragedies and Roy Keane Edinburgh Fringe 2005
Assembly Rooms — Technician
Working on Missing Persons was an interesting experience. I agreed to crew the show as a favour for a friend, and ended up running the changearound to and from the show with a team of professional and semi-professional theatre people. Working in the Assembly Rooms was a unique Edinburgh experience, and very worthwhile.
Iolanthe
Minack Theatre, Cornwall — Assistant Sound Designer
Suddenly Last Summer
ADC Theatre — Technical Director
Wild Honey ADC 150th Anniversary Show
ADC Theatre — Technical Director
Wild Honey presented the interesting challenge of landscape gardening the stage in to a 19th century Russian garden. This was a difficult production, with turn, trees, fireworks and guns to look after, as well as a house to fly in and out. This also had the added weight of being the Amateur Dramatic Club's 150th Anniversary Show, which added further expectations.
Taming of the Shrew ETG 2005
Touring Venues, ADC Theatre — Technical Director
Running a touring show is hard work. It leaves you little time to sleep, eat and do anything other than the show. However, it's also one of the most rewarding things you can do while at Cambridge. The show was very slick and professional, and I worked with some fantastic people. We were even thought of as professionals by several venues. This is was a great follow up to my experiences on Romeo and Juliet, which I hope to repeat again next year in a different role.
Marry Me a Little
ADC Theatre — Producer & Technical Director
This was a very solid and polished lateshow, that looked and sounded very good. Producing is hard work, especially when you're doing several other things as well. The show was still enjoyable and by any mark quite successful.
Touch Cambridge Contemporary Dance Workshop Show
ADC Theatre — Sound Designer
Doing sound for a dance show is an interesting challenge. It's more like Stage Managing that standard sound design, although the new PA system is very nice - and so was used to full effect. Beautifully lit by Eddy Langley, this was a really fun show to do, and looked fantastic.
Measure for Measure
ADC Theatre — Executive Sound Designer
South Pacific Lent Term Musical 2006
ADC Theatre — Sound Designer
With a cast of 22 and an orchestra of 17, including drums and keys, this was always going to be a demanding production to make audible - particularly with the waterfall and children with muchquieter voices. It's also the first large musical to use the Theatre's new PA system. With 14 Radios, 3 mixing desks, an 8-channel recording setup and some effects to play back, this was a demanding show to op - but by all accounts a success.

The Forer Factor
ADC Theatre — Technical Director
The "sequel" to "Back In Town Again: "Waltzing Out of Town ", this was my third production with Nick Mohammed, in an Edinburgh preview to get the show ready for this summer's Fringe. Very well recieved, with good sales, and similar sort of work to Back in Town Again. Well worth seeing if you're at the Fringe. Previews at the Hen and Chicken's Theatre, Islington, in July. Website
Travesties
ADC Theatre — Chief Electrician
Princess Ida
Minack Theatre, Cornwall — Sound Designer
The Minack Theatre in Cornwall is a unique place to put on a show, and the Cambirdge University G&S Society has a strong reputation for putting on a strong production of one of Guilbert and Sullivan's works there each year. Having had a taste last year, and after my success with South Pacific, I'm returning to the Minack this september with a cast of 30 and a band of 20 and a large enough budget to make it sound great.
Macbeth ETG 2006
Touring Venues, ADC Theatre — Tour Manager (Business)
The challenges of producing a touring show are numerous - from finding venues, to organising the accounts, to getting a team of good people together to make the show a success. Having toured twice previously I'm in an excellent position to make this a successful year. As business manager, my responsibilities lie basically in making the tour a financial success, but also in setting budgets, apointing a team and organising some of the logistical challenges.
Oaklahoma!
Cambridge Arts Theatre — Chief Production Electrician
Return to the Forbidden Planet Lent Term Musical 2007
ADC Theatre — Lead Sound Engineer
